Week 6: The Aftermath
Super Sunday has come and gone, and this weekend in the PFL sees all 15 clubs in the aftermath of a blazing May opener looking to either set themselves right or steer into the blazing blooms of the lilies. Let’s hear their stories!
Kaya FC – Iloilo
Last time out: 1-0 vs Cebu FC(Sunday), 9-0 vs PAF(Wednesday)
Next time out: BYE
To quote The Wire’s charismatic lead character Omar Little – you come at the king, you best not miss. Kaya’s leonine spirit came to the fore this week in two different ways at Campo Alcantara – first in shackling the then-surging Cebu FC on Sunday for the narrow win, then absolutely mauling the brave but overmatched Airmen on Wednesday afternoon to sit on top of the pile heading into the weekend.
Stallion Laguna FC
Last time out: 3-3 draw vs OneTaguig
Next time out: vs Davao Aguilas, 7pm Sunday
The Steeds picked the wrong time to slip, spurning a gilt opportunity to stay on the pace and now slipping into second. With a tough and organized Davao side looming, can they pick themselves up off the floor and gallop back into momentum?
Davao Aguilas FC
Last time out: 5-0 win vs Army
Next time out: vs Stallion Laguna(see above)
Spreading the scoring load around while keeping it tight at the back, the Eagles have soared to 3rd in the table, and if they can swoop down on a Stallion side picking themselves back up they can stake their claim as legitimate challengers going forward.
Manila Digger FC
Last time out: 3-1 win vs Loyola FC
Next time out: vs United City, Saturday @ 6:15 PM
Coach Pong Liman’s charges continue their merry dig upwards the table – but a tough matchup with United City awaits on Saturday night. Can they spoil the buzz the Citizens have under their new gaffer and keep surging upwards?
OneTaguig FC
Last time out: 3-3 draw vs Stallion Laguna
Next time out: vs Cebu FC on Sunday, 5:45 PM @ SRP Cebu
The Lighthousemen head down South with swagger in their step after being a stumbling block to the Stallion stampede, and with their lockdown midfield, can they impose a similar blockade against Cebu and restart a campaign that now has seen them drop 4 points in 2 weeks?
Cebu FC
Last time out: 0-1 loss to Kaya
Next time out: vs OneTaguig(see above)
The other half of our Sunday afternoon spectacular saw an even more shuddering shock to their campaign in an ill-tempered bow at Campo Alcantara – the question now is if they can get their heads back on and pick up the pieces to get back in the title discussion, or will they let their heads be their own worst enemy and start slipping off the top 5?
United City FC
Last time out: 7-0 win vs Garelli United
Next time out: vs Manila Digger(see above)
For all their early success so far, United City always seemed to be too compact under former gaffer Marian Mihail; now under Spaniard Ramon Tribulietx, they certainly proved to be more dynamic against an ultimately inferior Garelli side. The question looms large, however. if they can combine their signature compactness with a more dynamic offense and derail the upstart Diggers.
Mendiola FC
Last time out: 6-0 win vs Manila Montet
Next time out: vs Philippine Army, Sunday @ 4pm
Mendiola proved to be worth their while after netting their 2nd win of the season – and with a looming match against the second-bottom Servicemen, the Braves are looking to continue their swing of momentum and get back to .500.
Maharlika Taguig FC
Last time out: 4-2 win vs PAF
Next time out: BYE
After breaking their slide in style, the Maharlikans get the week off to regroup and recover from their two previous blowouts.
Tuloy FC
Last time out: BYE
Next time out: vs Garelli United, Saturday @ 9PM
After a week off, the youngsters of Tuloy head into battle with their Salesian spiritual brethren in a bid to restart their campaign.
Loyola FC
Last time out: 1-3 loss vs Manila Digger
Next time out: vs Manila Montet, Saturday @ 3:30 PM
After Mendiola had a swig on the tonic of beating Montet, a famished Loyola FC turn up now; can I Lupi rampage on the wooden-spooners?
Garelli United FC
Last time out: 0-7 loss vs United City
Next time out: vs Tuloy FC(see above)
The other half of the Salesian derby come into this match limping and demoralized after another 7-goal hiding: can they recover and take the bragging rights against their Southern brothers?
Philippine Air Force FC
Last time out: 2-4 loss vs Maharlika(Sunday), 0-9 loss vs Kaya(Wednesday)
Next time out: BYE
Boy did the Airmen see their momentum get shattered – shipping 13 goals within a week will see you slump back down the table. They have a chance to rest and regroup this weekend however.
Philippine Army FC
Last time out: 0-5 loss vs Davao Aguilas
Next time out: vs Mendiola FC(see above)
The Servicemen have a chance to avenge their aerial comrades against Mendiola, and a chance to salvage their own pride and grab their first points of the year.
Manila Montet FC
Last time out: 0-6 loss vs Mendiola FC
Next time out: vs Loyola FC(see above)
Rafael Mamonong acquitted himself for the Sky Blues last time out until he got hurt. Otherwise it’s your customary Montet paddling. Come on, do something.
A short weekend slate doesn’t mean any less action, so come on down to the games!
