In the shadow of the Tri-Stars’ last two World Cup qualifiers for this cycle, we still have a semi-full slate of games in the League. With the season approaching the home stretch, what will our valiant pitch warriors do this week to seal their fates and finish their stories?
Also, before we begin, this humble scribe joins the Filipino football community in mourning and saluting the life of Jose Antonio Prats. A tireless advocate of grassroots football and the founder of the Weekend Futbol League, Mr. Prats passed away earlier this week. His indefatigable passion and love of the game will be sorely missed. Godspeed to Mr. Prats, and peace to his family and loved ones.
Kaya Iloilo FC
Last time out: 3-1 win vs Manila Digger
Next time out: vs Mendiola FC, Sunday at 8 pm
-> Kaya once again does what champs do as they ground out the result against a game Manila Digger side. Can they keep rolling against a Mendiola side in disarray and move headlong like the Juggernaut to another title?
Davao Aguilas FC
Last time out: 3-0 win vs Loyola
Next time out: vs Cebu FC, Sunday at 5 pm (at SRP)
-> Mission accomplished for the now-second Eagles, and with a flight path up to Cebu on the horizon for Aber Ruzgal’s band of mad lads, can they pick off the Giants on the way to a dream season?
Cebu FC
Last time out: 16-2 win vs Garelli United
Next time out: vs Davao Aguilas (see above)
-> Good Lord, if Cebu FC blows this momentum again… apologies for the casual tone, but what else can you say when a club puts up a basketball run for a result? You can only hope they avoid a repeat of the Kaya match where a loss follows a big win.
Stallion Laguna FC
Last time out: 1-1 draw vs United City
Next time out: vs PAF FC, Saturday at 7 pm
-> It was a seemingly fatal stumble for the Steeds’ title hopes, drawing with UCFC last week. Needing help now to steal the title, the mission starts with a game against a battling Airmen side, with the hope Junior Sam reignites his goal-scoring form.
OneTaguig FC
Last time out: 9-1 win vs Mendiola
Next time out: BYE
-> Talk about breaking out of your recent slide in style – hanging 9 on Mendiola does wonders for your confidence. With their next game against a tough Manila Digger side moved to July, it should allow the Lighthousemen some rest and an opportunity to catch their legs.
United City FC
Last time out: 1-1 draw vs Stallion Laguna
Next time out: vs Tuloy FC, Sunday at 3 pm
-> How quickly form turns indeed, UCFC gaffer Ramon Tribulietx must be musing, after dropping 4 points in two weeks. Playing Tuloy FC should offer some respite if taken seriously, as the youngsters have played above their league standing all season.
Manila Digger FC
Last time out: 1-3 loss vs Kaya
Next time out: BYE
-> The Red and Yellow are on a bit of a backward slide despite two battling losses. The reschedule of their game vs OneTaguig to July should provide some respite for their squad to heal up and find that fire they had earlier in the year.
Loyola FC
Last time out: 0-3 loss to Davao Aguilas
Next time out: vs Maharlika Taguig, Sunday at 5:30 pm
-> Loyola’s winning streak was disabused of them against Davao Aguilas. Can they bounce back against an up-and-down Maharlika side?
Maharlika Taguig FC
Last time out: 5-0 win vs Manila Montet
Next time out: vs Loyola FC (see above)
-> How can a 5-0 win be a squib? When you do it like how Maharlika did and step off the gas for large swathes of the second half, that’s how. They can finally return to facing proper football teams again against a Loyola side smarting from getting beaten by Davao.
Mendiola FC
Last time out: 1-9 loss to OneTaguig
Next time out: vs Kaya FC (see above)
-> Talk about a need for damage limitation – if there was ever one, Coach Nhiboy’s boys need one this weekend against a Kaya side smelling blood.
Philippine Army FC
Last time out: 4-2 win vs Tuloy FC
Next time out: BYE
-> On the back of back-to-back wins, the Servicemen have earned a break. Rest well good sirs, and thank you for your service.
Tuloy FC
Last time out: 2-4 loss to Army
Next time out: vs United City (see above)
-> That’s back-to-back losses for Tuloy, but they’re still playing well their way. Can they avoid a third loss to United City?
Philippine Air Force FC
Last time out: BYE
Next time out: vs Stallion Laguna (see above)
-> The Airmen are refueled and cleared for takeoff, but it’s a challenging mission against a Stallion side hunting for blood after a bad draw. Can they get a battling result?
Garelli United FC
Last time out: 2-16 loss to Cebu FC
Next time out: vs Manila Montet, Saturday at 4 pm
-> Dear Garelli players, what in the blue hell was that? Losing is acceptable; getting sixteen hung on your heads isn’t. Please give yourselves some pride and beat Montet.
Manila Montet FC
Last time out: 0-5 loss vs Maharlika Taguig FC
Next time out: vs Garelli United (see above)
-> PAY YOUR PLAYERS PROPERLY.
Keep safe and have fun catching the league action this weekend!
