Defending champions Kaya FC-Iloilo continued their impressive run in the Philippines Football League (PFL) with a decisive 3-1 victory over Manila Digger on Saturday.
Kaya FC-Iloilo started aggressively, pressing high and creating early chances. Robert Lopez Mendy and Jarvey Gayoso were key figures in the initial assault, testing the Digger defense. The pressure paid off when Gayoso netted the opening goal, thanks to a precise assist from Eric Esso.
After conceding the first goal, Manila Digger shifted their strategy and adopted a more aggressive press. This change in tactics led to an equalizer, with Salifu Jatta heading home a beautiful cross delivered by Korean midfielder Jeon Sangcheon.
The game saw moments of brilliance from both sides, with Manila Digger’s former Kaya player, Eric Giganto, forcing a great save from Kaya’s goalkeeper Walid Birrou. Gayoso had multiple attempts to extend Kaya’s lead but was denied by Digger’s defense, notably by Yuya Kuriyama.
As the second half commenced, Kaya made strategic substitutions, bringing in Shuto Komaki, Marco Casambre, and Marwin Angeles for Fitch Arboleda, Jarvey Gayoso, and Park Yiyoung. Komaki quickly made an impact but saw his attempt saved by Digger’s goalkeeper Kuriyama.
The match’s intensity decreased as the second half progressed, but a critical error by Digger’s keeper allowed Lopez Mendy to score and put Kaya back in the lead. Digger’s Daiki Jahana responded with a powerful shot, but Birrou’s acrobatics kept Kaya in control. Shuto Komaki sealed the victory with a third goal for Kaya.
With this win, Kaya FC-Iloilo sits at the top of the PFL standings with 22 points. Jarvey Gayoso, the league’s leading scorer, will now join the Philippine Men’s National Football Team (PMNFT) training camp. Meanwhile, Manila Digger remains in 7th place with 15 points, looking to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
