Manila Digger FC continued its fine form to start their 2024 Philippines Football League (PFL) campaign as they beat Maharlika Taguig FC 2-1 earlier today at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The yellow-clad newcomers left it late to secure the full three points as Shin Minki finished from close range in the 88th minute. The goal was initially ruled out for handball but was eventually awarded after a discussion between referee Clifford Daypuyat and the linesmen.
Physicality ruled the clash over a hot and humid Sunday afternoon as both sides tussled over possession and chances. Eventually, it was Maharlika who struck first as Lucas del Rosario pounced on a poor clearance and powered home a left-footed strike from outside the box at 33 minutes.
It didn’t take long for Digger to respond though, as Sangcheon Jeon equalized ten minutes later with a composed finish in front of goal off Eric Giganto’s cross from the left side.
Maharlika started the second half stronger, but Digger goalkeeper Yuya Kuriyama was up to the task of keeping his side in the match, producing a few fine saves to keep the scoreline level.
Eventually, it was rewarded as Shin got to the end of a looping left-hand cross to take the win for Manila Digger.
Digger remains unbeaten after two matches, while Maharlika tastes their first defeat of the campaign.
